Xi'an (the capital of Shaanxi Province, abbreviated as "Hao", formerly known as Chang'an or Haojing)


Xi'an, referred to as "Hao", was called Chang'an and Haojing in ancient times. It is the capital of Shaanxi Province, a Sub-provincial division, a megacity, a core city of the Guanzhong Plain urban agglomeration, an important central city in Western China approved by the State Council, and an important national scientific research, education, and industrial base. By 2019, the city has 11 districts and 2 counties, with a total area of 10752 Square kilometre, a built-up area of 700.69 Square kilometre, a permanent population of 10.2035 million, and an urban population of 7.6128 million, with an urbanization rate of 74.61%.

Xi'an is located in the middle of the Guanzhong Plain, bordering the Wei River in the north and the Qinling Mountains in the south, with eight rivers running Chang'an. It is a "famous city with Human history" determined by UNESCO in 1981, one of the important birthplaces of Chinese civilization and the Chinese nation, the starting point of the Silk Road. In history, more than ten dynasties have established their capitals here, including Fenghao Capital, Qin Epang Palace, Terra Cotta Warriors, Han Weiyang Palace, Changle Palace, Sui Daxing City, Tang Daming Palace Xingqinggong Park and others outlined the "Chang'an Complex".

Xi'an is the best tourist destination in China and one of the cities with the best international image in China. There are two and six heritages listed in the The World Heritage List, namely, the the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor and the Terra Cotta Warriors, the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, the Small Wild Goose Pagoda, the Daming Palace site of Chang'an City in the Tang Dynasty, the Weiyang Palace site of Chang'an City in the Han Dynasty, and the Xingjiao Temple tower. There are also Fortifications of Xi'an, Bell and Drum Tower, Huaqing Pool, Zhongnan Mountains, Tang Paradise, Shaanxi History Museum, Forest of Steles and other attractions. There are seven "double first-class" universities in Xi'an, including Xi'an Jiaotong University, Northwestern Polytechnical University, Xidian University.

In February 2018, the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Rural Development issued the Guanzhong Plain Urban Agglomeration Development Plan to support Xi'an to build a National central city, an international comprehensive transportation hub, and an international metropolis with historical and cultural characteristics.
